Amid rumours that several States were preparing to ban his Model T on safety grounds (its hand operated braking system being deemed dangerous), Henry Ford finally succumbed to pressure from his son Edsel and in July 1926 authorised development of a successor. Introduced to the public on 2nd December 1927, the Model A was greeted with unprecedented demand. Its chassis was longer and lower slung than that of the Model T and while it still retained transverse leaf front and rear suspension it proved a significant advance. Designed by Howard Hicks, its 3285cc, L-Head four cylinder engine developed 40bhp (twice the Model T's output) and boasted coil ignition and an integral water pump. Mated to a three-speed manual gearbox, it gave the new model a top speed of 65mph necessitating the fitment of four-wheel drum brakes.
Finished in beige over black with red pinstriping, this particular left-hand drive example wears two-door Cabriolet bodywork complete with rumble seat. One of the first members of the collection, it was restored a number of years ago but remains highly presentable. Equipped with Ford embossed kick plates on its running boards, Ford 'Twolite' headlamps and a Ford / Boyce motometer, other nice touches include: twin side-mounted spare wheels, a mesh radiator guard, etched glass wind deflectors, scuttle-mounted side lights, rear luggage grid and a Sparton horn. Showing an unwarranted 12,525 miles on its odometer (which may or may not represent the total travelled since its refurbishment), it is trimmed in dark brown upholstery throughout. Exhibiting a gentle patina, the appeal of this 'fully-loaded' Model A is not hard to grasp.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
