Lot details Registration No: TEA 159 Chassis No: PIB55213DN Mot Expiry: Sept 2012
Had you woken up this morning determined to purchase a genuine Type 59 Bugatti, there would have been at least a couple of potential problems. Firstly, Ettore Bugatti only built six of these stunning 3.3-litre Grand Prix cars. Secondly, just supposing you could find one, you'd have to be very wealthy to ensure a rival bidder didn't beat you to the post. Former AA patrolman Bob Jones no doubt had this in mind when he designed the Teal Type 59 Evocation in 1989, of which 13 were reputedly produced and sold to Australia, Japan and Switzerland as well as the UK.
This example was produced by Teal in 1995, when the cost would have been around £28,000. It was first owned by Derek Huntley of Sunderland who passed it on to Leslie Davidson of Northumberland in 2006. The previous keeper was David Best of Kent, who acquired the evocation in 2008. The alloy-bodied car is powered by a 210bhp Jaguar 3.8-litre XK engine, mated to an all-synchromesh four-speed manual plus overdrive gearbox. The potential maximum speed is understood to be around 143mph and the acceleration, bearing in mind an all up weight of just 17cwt, is said to be rapid! The car rides on painted 18-inch centre-lock 60-spoke wire wheels shod with Michelin Super Comfort tyres.
The Teal has covered just 13,365 miles to date and the vendor considers its bodywork, paintwork, trim, engine and transmission to all be "perfect" and the car to possess "fantastic patina". As you would expect, it is finished in Blue and has a Blue leather interior. It also wears the appropriate registration plate - TEA1 59 - and comes complete with Historic registration and a large history file, including old MOTs etc. A new MOT is planned by the time of the sale.
PLEASE NOTE: This vehicle has an MOT until Sept 2012.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
