According to the vendor, this charming righthand drive Edwardian four-seat Tourer was supplied new by a company called Johnson & Montcrieff of Sydney, Australia, since when it has had just three further keepers. The car was imported to the UK in 2001 and its relatively advanced specification includes braking on all four wheels and a four-speed manual gearbox. Its 12hp four-cylinder engine has just been treated to a thorough overhaul, during which new cast iron pistons were installed - an identical spare unit is included in the sale, provided the buyer is able to collect it within three months of the auction. 'YJ 8402' features Green bodywork teamed with Brown leather cloth interior trim and it rides on distinctive Yellow artillery wheels. The vendor currently views the Argyll's engine and interior trim as "recently restored", the four-door open bodywork as "very good", and the transmission and paintwork as "good". The car comes complete with a Veteran Car Club dating certificate that was issued in 2002.
By 1906, the Argyll concern had become Scotland's largest motor manufacturer and occupied a grandiose 14 acre premises in Alexandria, West Dunbartonshire, the imposing terracotta facade of which still exists today. However, following the death of the company's founder Alex Govan in 1907, the company commenced a gentle decline and having re-emerged from liquidation in 1910 finally closed its doors in 1932. Argyll's were notable for their build quality and mechanical innovation - eg the J M Rubery four-wheeled braking system as fitted to the sale car and the Burt & McCollum sleeve valve engines that powered the firm's 15 and 20hp models. Argylls of any sort are now few and far between, and the sale of 'YJ 8402' provides a rare opportunity to acquire a slice of Scotland's motoring heritage.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
