Matchless, one of the oldest marques of British motorcycles, were manufactured in Plumstead, London, from 1899 to 1966. Known for producing a diverse range of models, from small two-strokes to 750cc four-stroke twins, Matchless carved out a legacy of innovation and racing success. The marque's notable achievements include a victory in the first single-cylinder race at the Isle of Man TT in 1907. After merging with AJS in 1931 to form Associated Motor Cycles (AMC), Matchless continued to produce iconic models well into the mid-1960s. The Matchless G9, alongside its AJS counterpart, the Model 20, was developed to rival the twin-cylinder offerings from BSA and Triumph.
This particular G9 has been part of a private collection since 1982, primarily kept on static display. Its history is well-documented with a buff logbook and a modern V5, confirming its provenance. The DVLA records note three previous owners, including a transfer within the same family, while the buff logbook provides additional detail on its ownership history.
As an excellent example of mid-century British motorcycle craftsmanship, the Matchless G9 combines classic aesthetics with dependable twin-cylinder engineering. Having spent many years in a static collection, it will require recommissioning before road use, but it remains a complete and authentic machine with strong documentation. Offered at no reserve and accompanied by both its original buff logbook and a modern V5, this G9 represents an appealing opportunity to acquire a well-provenanced British twin with genuine period character, suitable for sympathetic restoration, display, or return to regular use.
