When BMC replaced the MGA with the MGB in 1962, the most fundamental differences were the employment of a unitary-construction bodyshell rather than a separate chassis and body, and a larger 4-cylinder engine of 1798cc capacity instead of the 1622cc four that powered the final run of MGAs.
Following twelve years in dry storage, this MGB roadster, which originally left the famous MG works at Abingdon in 1967, was the subject of a full restoration, said to cost over £8000, which included the replacement of the body panels. The shell is now described as being as new with excellent white painted bodywork. The black leather interior piped in white is said to be good too.
Since acquisition by the current owner some five years ago, the wiring loom has been renewed, the front suspension rebuilt and, wisely, the 1.8-litre 4-cylinder engine, which is claimed to be in excellent order, has been converted to run on unleaded petrol. A Kenlowe electric cooling fan has been added as well as a useful cut-out switch to shut down the engine electrics. In addition, a change to a Ford Sierra 5-speed, all-synchromesh manual gearbox has been made with new clutch and propshaft, while the wheels, attractive wires, were renewed around four years ago.
Included are various receipted invoices detailing refurbishment work done, old MOTs, a new spare petrol pump and a dynamo pulley. The sportscar was most recently MOT tested only last month.
