Once that of a proud UK manufacturer, the Riley trademark is currently owned by BMW and may or may not grace a motorcar again. The firm's history dates back to 1890, however, when the Bonnick Cycle Company of Coventry was taken over by William Riley Junior in 1896. It was the Riley 9 four-wheeler of 1926 that really put the company on the map though, and with its 1,100cc twin-camshaft engine soon found success in competition, further boosting the order book.

The Riley 9 on offer is a Tourer from 1928 that's finished in Green and Black and trimmed in Dark Red leather. The vendor believes chassis 60824 was dismantled for restoration in the mid-1990s, following which it passed through several hands until ending up in those of Don Allcock who refurbished the engine, body frame, magneto and steering wheel etc before ill health sadly prevented his further input. PH 7527 then passed to the vendor who completed the restoration. He now considers the bodywork to be 'very good', the paintwork 'good', the interior 'retrimmed', the engine 'refurbished' and the transmission to be 'all working okay'. The Riley's dynamo is apparently playing up but should be rectified by the time of the sale. The car's current MOT is valid into November.
