The Beetle is a true icon of our age. In basically unaltered production for 64 years, from 1939-2003 with worldwide sales of over 21 million units (over 6 million more than Henry's Model 'T'), it has outstripped its nearest rivel for the title of most popular car in history by miles.
This 1968 type 1 Beetle with torsion bar suspension has been the subject of a long and meticulous restoration. Having had just two previous owners it was bought in 1988 as a project and restored by James Pilling over a period of years. It was finally completed in 1995 and shown at the august Knebworth Classic Car Show where it was awarded the 'Best of Show' on its first outing. This is truly a 'nut and bolt' restoration and from the ground up the whole car has been kept original. The paintwork is probably better than when new having been prepared with the bodyshell stripped and refinished in standard Beige in the Pilling's Hertfordshire family workshop and then wax treated and undersealed. The engine and gearbox have been overhauled and the chassis was also stripped to the bare metal and powder coated and it has had a new wiring harness, new doors, new wings, a boot panel and a petrol tank. The headlining is new as are the carpets and the whole project was carried out regardless of cost.
Having had a personalised registration number for some years it is now offered with its correct and original for the year registration. It has been carefully stored and run occasionally each year since in order to pass its MOT, which is now current until 2007, and this is indeed possibly one of the finest examples of this car on the market today.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
