Lot details
Registration No: JHO 101
Chassis No: 401/807
Mot Expiry: July 2013

This, indeed, is the car for the connoisseur. It can only be modesty on the part of the Bristol publicity boys which has prevented them from quoting as the 401's slogan 'The Best Car in Britain' (Motor Sport magazine, January 1953).
Introduced in Autumn 1949, the 401 was characterised by its super-smooth, aerodynamic bodywork. Honed in the Bristol Aeroplane Company's wind tunnel and built using Milanese coachbuilder Touring's 'Superleggera' technique (aluminium panelling cinched over a chassis mounted tubular steel superstructure), it boasted a commendably lithe kerb weight of approximately 2,700lbs. Equipped with transverse-leaf independent front suspension and hydraulic drum brakes, the new Bristol proved a notably fine handler taking Touring Class wins in both the Cannes Rally of the Sun and Tulip Rally for 1951. Powered by a BMW-inspired 1971cc OHV straight-six engine allied to four-speed manual transmission, the elegant sports saloon promised nigh-on 100mph performance and spirited acceleration. Only in production for four years (by which time a mere 618 are thought to have been made), the model's exclusive £3,212 13s 4d price tag was a reflection of the aircraft quality materials used in its construction.

This particular example - chassis number 401/807 - is notable for having had just two keepers during the past forty-one years. Purchased by C.M. Gandon Esq. of Kent on August 2nd 1971, it has been in the current ownership since 1993. Despatched to marque specialist Brian May shortly thereafter, the 401 was treated to an extensive restoration that included the fitting of a replacement but correct type engine (number 1620 supplanting 1672 which in turn had usurped the factory fitted unit 1622). The refurbishment cost some £35,000, a substantial sum given the increase in labour rates over the last two decades, and there is a wealth of correspondence on file regarding its progress not to mention a variety of photographs taken before, during and after the work was completed. The vendor informs us that this is a reluctant sale prompted by lack of use, approaching retirement and the desire to fund other things. Increasingly collectible, the Bristol 401 is justly revered for its road manners and engineering finesse. Worthy of close inspection, 'JHO 101' is offered for sale with historic class (free) road fund licence and MOT certificate valid until July 2013.

PLEASE NOTE: The vendor has informed us that the vehicle was restored by Brian May from 2005 to 2009 and not shortly after he purchased it as stated in the catalogue.
