Lot details Registration No: FAS 40 Chassis No: 11959 Mot Expiry: Exempt
Despatched to Messrs Bamber of Leeds on 31st October 1934, chassis 11959 is reputedly the only Alvis Speed 20SC Drophead Coupe to wear Brainsby Woollard branded coachwork (though, the actual construction of its handsome three-position body was sub-contracted to John Charles & Co of Ealing). Although little is known about the car's early history, an accompanying continuation buff logbook and copy factory correspondence reveal that it belonged to Sidney Richard Cain of Henley-on-Thames by 1962. Extensively restored the following decade whilst in the possession of Raymond Frederick Sargeant with the task apparently being completed by Rob Green of Gloria Coachworks, the four-seater was subsequently sold to M. Daouk via Sotheby's December 10th 1984 auction. Entrusted to marque specialist Red Triangle following a period of inactivity, chassis 11959 benefited from attention to its steering, hubs, front / rear bearings, kingpins, brake shoes, carburettors and tyres between 2001 and 2003 at a cost of £4,133.37. Entering the current ownership that same year at an indicated 26,742 miles (thought to represent the total covered since its 1970s restoration was completed), `FAS 40' was treated to a new camshaft / camshaft bearings, piston rings and main bearings shortly thereafter. Having completed numerous tours of the UK and Europe, the Speed 20SC succumbed to cylinder head failure in 2010. The subject of a photographically documented bare metal respray even as a suitable replacement head / valves / guides were being sourced, the four-seater also had its magneto refurbished in time to attend the vendor's son's wedding during 2011. Covering less than 900 miles over the last two years (the odometer currently reads 34,927), the Alvis performed well upon a recent inspection. Highly presentable aside from worn carpets and tarnished rear three-quarter bumpers, this delightful Post Vintage Thoroughbred is offered for sale with history file and fresh MOT certificate.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
