1932 Hillman Minx Tourer

Lot details
Registration No: UJ 82
Chassis No: 123
Mot Expiry: None

Following his brief partnership with Louis Coatalen (1907-1909) and their sadly unsuccessful foray into the world of luxury cars - as witnessed by the magnificent 9654cc six-cylinder Hillman-Coatalen - William Hillman reset his sights on more pedestrian fare. Subsequently known for manufacturing cars that were well designed if a little conservative his company was acquired by the Rootes Group in 1928. Benefiting from a bountiful engineering pool fed by fellow tributaries such as Humber (and later Sunbeam-Talbot) Hillmans built under the new parent concern were characterised by their advanced specification and good value. Introduced at the October 1931 Motor Show, the Hillman Minx was based around a sturdy ladder-frame chassis equipped with semi-elliptic leaf-sprung suspension and four-wheel Bendix drum brakes. Powered by an 1185cc four-cylinder sidevalve engine allied to three-speed (later four-speed) manual transmission, it was reputedly capable of 60mph and over 30mpg. Although, the vast majority built were saloons, the Hillman could also be had as a tourer. Reliable, refined and surprisingly roomy, the Minx quickly became a best-seller.
According to the accompanying documentation, this particular example was acquired by Harold Douglas Ardron of Barnsley during 1953. Still in his possession thirty years later, it is thought to have entered the previous ownership sometime thereafter. A two-door tourer finished in red over black with red upholstery, 'UJ 82' is now in need of extensive restoration. A potentially rewarding project - the vendor suggesting that it would be "perfect for whiling away long winter nights" - this diminutive Hillman is offered for sale with buff logbook, Hillman Minx handbook, old style V5 registration document, two expired tax discs (1953, 1958) and some Hillman related literature.
