Lot details Registration No: PCD685M Chassis No: GHN5328591G Mot Expiry: May 2013
Introduced in May 1962, the monocoque MGB was a welcome progression from the body-on-frame T-Series and MGA models that preceded it. The more modern construction resulted in weight savings (the car turned the scales at 2028lb), reduced manufacturing costs and notably tauter handling. Initially, the B was only available in Roadster form, the GT not being offered until 1965. Suspension was by wishbones and coil springs at the front and a live axle mounted on leaf springs at the rear. Damping was by lever arm units all round. Braking was by discs at the front and drums at the rear. Power was provided by a 1798cc version of BMC's four-cylinder B-Series engine that produced 95bhp at 5,400 rpm.
The MKII model of 1967 brought an updated manual gearbox with revised ratios and synchromesh on all gears, as well as the option of a Borg Warner automatic unit. Other changes included a revised rear axle and a switch from dynamos to alternators. In 1969 Rostyle wheels replaced the previous pressed steel ones for standard fit and the MKIII derivative of 1972 brought a new facia and improved heater. By the time Roadster manufacture ceased in 1980, a total of 399,070 had been made, a large proportion of which are still providing excellent service today.
This right-hand drive Roadster is a late chrome bumper car that rides on Minilite wheels and features Iris Blue bodywork, a Dark Blue hood and Black vinyl upholstery. It has the most desirable transmission combination of manual gearbox plus overdrive. The vendor informs us that 'PCD 685M' was retained by the previous owner for 24 years and "its bodywork has been restored to a very high standard and the MG equipped with new brightwork and stainless steel petrol tank". The current MOT is valid until May 31st 2013.
