Norton became one of the great marques of the now virtually extinct British motorcycle industry, the firm founded in 1901 by James Lansdowne Norton. His first Norton machines employed Swiss Moto-Reve and French Peugeot engines and were built in the UK under licence. However, it was riding a Peugeot V-twin powered Norton that pioneer racer Rem Fowler won the first of many TT races for the marque in 1907 around the Isle of Man. By 1924, Bracebridge Street built bikes with Birmingham-made engines were winners of both the Senior and Sidecar TTs. Whilst during the war years, Norton supplied some 100,000 of their 16H solo bikes to the British Army as well as many Big 4 sidecar outfits with driven sidecar wheel for cross-country service.
Offered here is a rare 1957/8-built Offroader with a 750cc engine, a competition-specification magneto, twin carburettors and a high level exhaust. Currently, the two-cylinder engine is said to be in good order as is the transmission, whilst the cycle parts as well as the red and black paintwork are also reportedly in good condition.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
