1927 Austin Seven Chummy
No Reserve

Sold for £11,250

(including buyers premium)

Lot details

Registration No: RO 6165
Chassis No: A42413
MOT: Exempt

  • Formerly the property of newspaper and radio entrepreneur Sir Ray Stanley Tindle CBE DL
  • First registered in Hertfordshire on January 1st 1927 (or so its 'RO 6165' number plate would imply)
  • Running nicely but would doubtless benefit from recommissioning / servicing

Arguably the forefather of mass motoring 'giants' such as the Volkswagen Beetle, Citroen 2CV and BMC Mini, the Austin Seven was launched in 1922 and quickly went on to become the epitome of economic small car family motoring. An extremely versatile design, its simple but well executed A-frame, leaf-sprung chassis also played host to a bewildering range of derivatives from Brooklands single-seaters to two-speed tractors (all powered by the ubiquitous, four-cylinder, sidevalve 747cc engine) though, it is perhaps in the guise of a 'Chummy' tourer that the model is most fondly remembered. Continuing spares availability means that owning a Chummy in the 21st Century is still a practical proposition as well as being a great entry into the Vintage Sports Car Club where its ability on driving tests and trials in the right hands is second to none.

Formerly the property of newspaper and radio entrepreneur Sir Ray Stanley Tindle CBE DL, this Chummy was first registered in Hertfordshire on January 1st 1927 (or so its 'RO 6165' number plate would imply). Presenting as an older restoration, the Austin sports sundry blemishes to its red / black coachwork but the interior and hood appear to be in good order. Understood to be running nicely, the Seven would nonetheless benefit from recommissioning / servicing following a period of dry storage. Offered with a small quantity of expired MOT certificates dating back to the late 1990s (the most recent being issued in 2011) and a Swansea V5C registration document.
