Chassis No: 3107
Mot Expiry: May 2013

The innovative Louis Renault created his first car in 1898, in the backyard of his parents' house. On receiving orders for the tiny de Dion-engined vehicle, he wasted no time in founding Renault Frères in Billancourt, Seine with his two brothers, Fernand and Marcel. They quickly recognised the publicity that could be achieved by participation in motorsport and their instant road-racing success did indeed result in rapid expansion - by the outbreak of WWI the company had become one of Europe's leading car manufacturers. The Type T Renault was a 9hp single-cylinder model produced for just two years - 1903 and 1904.

The example now offered is from the second year of manufacture and has remained within the same family since 1959. A partial restoration was carried out by the renowned marque specialist H F Welham at the time of acquisition. The task was then completed by Robert Laycock of Briardale Workshops, Yorkshire up to 1999. The vendor informs us that this charming veteran has taken part in several London-Brighton runs since that time. However, following a dating application made to the VCC in 1997, the dating committee confirmed the year of manufacture as 1904, but wanted to see a Renault gearbox fitted in place of the current Humber before officially finalising the matter. A period correct Renault unit was subsequently located in France, thoroughly refurbished and is included in the sale so the next keeper can install it and fully comply with the VCC's wishes.

The Type T is finished in Blue and trimmed in Black leather. The vendor currently classes the rear entry bodywork as "excellent", the paintwork as "excellent bar some minor chips", and the interior trim, single-cylinder engine and three-speed gearbox as "excellent". With original-type gearbox installed, the little Renault will hopefully be winging its way to Brighton again very soon.
