1965 Porsche 911 Competition Car

Estimated at £24,000 - £28,000

Lot details
Registration No: UN-REG
Chassis No: 911-302074
Mot Expiry: None

Unveiled in prototype guise at the September 1963 Frankfurt Motor Show (but not entering production until the following August), the Porsche 911 was enthusiastically received by the contemporary motoring press. Based around a steel monocoque bodyshell equipped with all round independent torsion-bar suspension, rack-and-pinion steering and four-wheel disc brakes, its distinctive silhouette was the work of Ferdinand 'Butzi' Porsche and Erwin Komenada. Derived from the marque's Type 804 Grand Prix racing programme, the model's rear-mounted 1991cc flat-six engine was allied to five-speed manual transmission. Credited with 130bhp @ 6,100rpm even the very first 911s were reputedly capable of circa 130mph. Lighter and more compact than later incarnations, the O-series cars (built between August 1964 and August 1967) have long been sought after by racers and collectors alike.
Finished in yellow with black cloth / vinyl upholstery, this particular example is variously described by the vendor as being in "good" (interior trim, bodywork, paintwork, wheels / tyres) or "very good" (1991cc engine, five-speed manual gearbox, electrical equipment, chassis) condition. Reputedly assembled on August 6th 1965 and supplied new to California, 'TAN 184' had journeyed to Australia by the early 1980s. Said to have been converted into a race car by its previous keeper in 1998, the coupe sports a "full roll cage to FIA specification with removable hip bar and front hoop". While, other modifications include: "a FIA compliant race seat, driver / passenger harnesses, fire extinguisher, internal / external battery cut-out switches, front / rear towing eyes, Koni shock absorbers and alloy suspension tower braces". Further benefiting from "an engine rebuilt to 'S' type tune" and "period ventilated front / rear discs with balance bar", the car is understood to have competed in various Porsche Club events, tarmac rallies and historic events over the last eight years. Still considered to be comparatively fresh by the Antipodean seller, it boasts such niceties as lightweight carpets and a Momo steering wheel. Potentially eligible for a host of pre-1966 events, this early 911 is worthy of close inspection.

All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
