It was in 1956 that Jaguar brought out a brand new generation of smaller sporting saloons, which were considered very compact at the time, no longer with separate chassis and bodies, but employing unitary-construction bodyshells. The first model in the new range was fitted with a 2.4-litre 6-cylinder engine based on the legendary XK motor, which powered both the legendary XK120 of 1951-55 and the newly-launched XK140 replacement, though with shorter stroke. A year later, in 1957, the 2.4 Mk1 saloon was joined by a 3.4-litre powered version and, from 1959, the restyled Mk2 with much thinner pillars came to market, powered by new 3.8-litre motor or the original 2.4.
On the block here is a righthand drive Mk2, manufactured at Browns Lane in 1965, which, according to the entrant, has fully charted history from new and, having spent many years in Cornwall, has only done 15,000 miles in the last 20 years as substantiated by all the old MOTs on file. The saloon bodywork is described as good with claimed to be original maroon paintwork fair, albeit with some chips. The 3442cc six is reportedly in excellent order with clutch and gearbox renewed, while condition of electrical equipment and tyres is said to be excellent too. The 56,227 miles displayed on the odometer when entered for the sale is believed by the vendor to be the genuine total mileage.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
