Lot details Registration No: YJL 988 Chassis No: GHN39668 Mot Expiry: None
Introduced in the May of 1962, the monocoque MG B was a welcome progression from the body-on-frame T-Series and MG A models that preceded it. The more modern construction resulted in weight savings (the car turned the scales at 2028 lb), reduced manufacturing costs and notably tauter handling.
Initially, the B was only available in Roadster form - the hatchback GT derivative not being offered until 1965. Suspension was by wishbones and coil springs at the front and a live axle mounted on leaf springs at the rear. Damping was by lever arm units all round. Braking was by discs at the front and drums at the rear. At launch, the model was powered by a three-bearing version of the 1798cc B-Series engine that produced 95bhp at 5,400rpm. However, with an eye on superior reliability, this unit was replaced by a five-bearing one two years into production. By the time the Roadster line was closed in 1980, a total of 399,070 are said to have been produced; a large proportion of which are still providing good service today - not least in historic racing and rallying.
The right-hand drive example on offer is a 'pull handle' Roadster built in 1963, that has recently been converted to Appendix K specification for classic racing, and comes complete with the appropriate MSA HTP papers (issued November 2010). The fully-restored, rust-free bodyshell is finished in Dove Grey with a black interior and white hardtop, and rides on Minilite-style wheels. The specification includes: a suitably-tuned 1840 cc engine coupled to a four-speed, non-overdrive gearbox; full rollcage; plumbed in fire-system; ignition cut-out; high-backed racing seat with harness; internally-run fluid lines; alloy long-distance fuel tank; new wiring loom; fully overhauled brakes and suspension.
The vendor regards 'YJL 988' as having "perfect" coachwork and paintwork, "very good" engine and transmission and "new" interior trim. The B comes with a number of spares.
Racing MG Bs are fun and surprisingly fast, and are eligible for countless events every weekend of the season. Easy to work on and cheap to service and repair they are the perfect entrée to historic racing. Racing per pound doesn't come much better than this!
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
