Lot details Registration No: E666HSG Chassis No: SCC085912HHHD12460 Mot Expiry: June 2010
Widely regarded as the best of the normally-aspirated, Giorgetto Giugiaro-styled Lotus Esprits, the S3 was introduced on April 22nd 1981. Visually updated via a plethora of colour-coded aerodynamic aids (front spoiler, side skirts, air scoops etc), the model also boasted a new steering wheel, seats and instruments. Derived from the Essex Turbo Esprit, its galvanised backbone chassis featured all-round independent suspension, rack-and-pinion steering and four-wheel disc brakes. Light and supremely agile in the best Lotus tradition, the S3 was powered by a mid-mounted 2174cc DOHC four-cylinder engine allied to five-speed manual transmission. A fitting swansong, the updated HC version made its UK debut in early 1987. With 172bhp and 163lbft on tap thanks to an improved cooling system, Nikasil cylinder liners and higher 10.9:1 compression ratio, the newcomer was reputedly capable of 0-60mph in 6.5 seconds and 138mph. Further enhanced via a larger capacity battery, full engine / transmission undertrays and adjustable-rake seats, it was decidedly short-lived. Forced to make way for the new generation 'X180' Esprit in October 1987, the HC is deservedly prized among today's collectors.
Finished in black with tan half-leather upholstery, this particular example is described by the vendor as being in "excellent" condition with regard to its engine, five-speed manual gearbox, electrical equipment, interior trim, bodywork and paintwork. Reportedly "dry stored in a heated garage", the Lotus is further understood to have had "four previous owners the last of whom kept it for nineteen years". Riding on correct-type BBS cross-spoke alloys shod with fresh Pirelli tyres and apparently benefiting from "a recent cambelt change and MOT", the two-seater is said to retain its "original stereo and alarm" as well as "a stainless steel exhaust and full toolkit". Commenting that "the bodywork is excellent with a deep high-gloss shine and no cracks or microblisters", the seller adds "the interior is exceptional with no signs of wear" before summing up 'E666 HSG' as "a very original car in 'time warp' order". Worthy of close inspection, this striking HC is offered for sale with "original purchase invoice, service history (supporting bills, old MOTs) and handbooks".
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
