Aston Martin owes its name to marque founder Lionel Martin and the Aston Clinton hill where Martin's souped-up Singer Ten was a class-winner at a 1913 hillclimb meeting held on a stretch of public road in rural Buckinghamshire. In partnership with Robert Bamford, Bamford and Martin sold Singers and Calthorpes in Fulham and South Kensington. Their first car to carry the famous name took to the road in 1921. After closure in 1926, a new Aston Martin concern soon fired up in Feltham and, when David Brown took over, production moved to Newport Pagnell.
Following acquisition from the previous owner of some thirty years, this V8 coupe with five-speed manual gearbox, which first left the Buckinghamshire factory in 1973, has been in receipt of much work. For with the help of the Heritage Department of Aston Engineering, the 2+2 GT has been extensively rebuilt over the past two years with refurbishment reportedly carried out to most areas.
The front chassis has received attention and the sills were renewed in 2003 when the fixed head bodywork was renovated and repainted in Mendip Blue metallic. The blue leather interior, still original, is said to be in excellent condition. The eight-cylinder motor was also overhauled in 2003, the clutch replaced in 2004, the brake calipers and the discs all round have been overhauled and Opus electronic ignition fitted; the Aston subsequently proving to be reliable and to drive well.
PLEASE NOTE: Aston Engineering mainly helped with the supply of parts for the restoration of this car and did very little work on the vehicle.
PLEASE NOTE: This vehicle is not running on all cylinders.
