Jaguar's Mark X saloon assumed top-of-the-range status at its introduction in 1961. Its wider track and lower roofline ensured an infinitely more modern look than that managed by the outgoing MKIX, while the four headlamps and squat, vaned radiator grille heralded a new image for the marque. The newcomer was, however, to be last Jaguar to enjoy an abundance of wood trim, which not only accounted for the fascia, escutcheons and window sills, but also extended to a pair of fold-out rear picnic tables, plus a third one stowed beneath the dashboard. The Mark X was the first Jaguar Saloon to feature independent rear suspension - in essence a wider-track version of that initially seen on the E-Type. The front suspension comprised double wishbones and coil springs. At launch the Jaguar was powered by a 3781cc version of the company's ubiquitous straight-six, DOHC XK engine. Upgrades introduced at the 1964 London Motorshow included: an increase in capacity of the standard engine to 4235cc and a new all-synchromesh, four-speed manual gearbox. Many owners, however, plumped for the optional Borg Warner automatic transmission - especially those in the North American markets, at whom the model was heavily targeted. Braking was by discs all-round and power-assisted steering was standard. By the time of the 1966 London Motorshow, the range had been renamed 420G, some 5,763 of which were built before the model was superseded by the XJ6.
'RAB 676F' was first registered on August 21st 1967 and sports Warwick Grey coachwork. The first stub in the accompanying service voucher book is stamped Hewitts Garages Ltd of Amblecote - suggesting they could have been the supplying dealer. Having spent some three-and-a-half years in the Worcester area, the Jaguar moved with Michael Gardner to Devon, where it appears to have remained into 1980 - the 1980/1981 MOT carried out by Hills of Sidmouth quotes the mileage as 78,180. Since 2004, the car has been MOT'd in the Liverpool/Manchester area and the certificate issued in May this year quotes the mileage at 89,451. These mileages are unwarranted, but could well be correct. The 420G comes complete with a continuation green logbook, V5C Registration Document, original Maintenance Vouchers booklet, Sales and Service Facilities brochure, plus assorted MOTs dating back to 1978.
