1964 Triumph Herald 1200 Race Car

Lot details
Registration No: DRC967B
Chassis No: GA137248DL
Mot Expiry: None

Standard-Triumph launched the Herald in 1959 as a replacement for its ageing Standard 8/10 models. It bucked the trend towards monocoque construction by featuring a separate chassis to which the main tub was bolted. The one-piece front end folded forwards to provide optimum access to the engine and suspension, while all outer panels - including the roof - could be unbolted for easy repair. The design made for the ready adoption of alternative body styles and Saloon, Coupe, Convertible, Estate and Van derivatives were all offered during the model's 12-year reign, over which production numbers exceeded 300,000.

The Herald Coupe on offer was produced in 1964 but has been dramatically uprated in recent years in order to serve as a race car. The transformation was clearly successful as it apparently had a number of class wins and finished 3rd overall in last year's Classic Sports Car Club's Swinging Sixties Series. The impressive specification is understood to include: Body - Herald chassis with steel sills, rear wings, door skins, floors and bulkhead; glassfibre hardtop, bootlid and clamshell flip-up bonnet/front wings. Engine - 1500cc Spitfire decked block; custom made Phoenix steel crankshaft; Carillo H beam connecting rods; JE forged TR5/6 pistons; 264 Kent camshaft; skimmed, ported and polished big valve head; twin Weber 45 DCOE carburetters. The claimed output is 151bhp at the flywheel. Transmission - AP racing clutch; Ford Type 9 close-ratio five-speed gearbox; custom-made two piece propshaft; Quaife limited slip differential. Brakes/suspension/steering (front) - vented discs with Wilwood 4-pot callipers; Caterham uprights, uprated coil springs and fully adjustable AVO dampers; (rear) - fully rose jointed GT6 drums/backplates; unique custom made chrome vanadium transverse leaf spring with rose jointed location arms and fully adjustable dampers. The vendor regards this unique, street legal Herald racer as a reliable and competitive proposition that's equally suitable for novice and experienced competitors alike.
