Lot details Registration No: MR 4248 Chassis No: SAJJBALWCC366152 Mot Expiry: July 2006
Visually updated by Pininfarina with a new 'glasshouse' and sharper, more a la mode sheetmetal, the Series III Jaguar XJ12 was launched in March 1979. Retaining its predecessor's all round independent coil sprung suspension, disc brakes and power assisted rack and pinion steering, it was credited with a class leading ride / handling balance. Noted for the refinement of its fabulously smooth 5,343cc SOHC V12 and slick three-speed automatic gearbox, criticisms as to fuel economy were alleviated to some degree by the introduction of a new H.E. engine in 1981. Despite developing more power and torque (some 299bhp and 318lbft respectively) courtesy of its redesigned Michael May cylinder heads, this new High Efficiency unit was said to reduce fuel consumption by up to twenty-five per cent. Reportedly capable of sprinting to 60mph in 7.5 seconds and on to a top speed of 151mph, the Series III XJ12 was for many the last true bastion of pre-Ford Jaguar.
Reportedly in single family ownership until 1997, this particular example is said to have had just one registered keeper since then. Finished in metallic blue with beige upholstery, it is described by the vendor as being in very good overall condition. Showing just 65,000 miles on the odometer, a figure substantiated by its "full service history from 900 miles up to 64,630 miles with all invoices", it is offered for sale with the private number plate 'MR 4248' and MOT certificate current until July 2006.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
