The first of the XJ12s saw the light of day in July 1972, at which time they were the world's only mass-produced 12-cylinder motorcars. From 1981 the engines were equipped with the new Michael May-designed `fireball' high compression cylinder heads, and from 1983 onwards the top specification Jaguar versions were badged as Sovereigns - a name previously only associated with the Daimler marque. Series III production finally ceased in 1992, by which time some 10,500 examples had been built with the V12 engine.
This handsome right-hand drive Solent Blue Sovereign was sold new in January 1988 by Hollingdrake Jaguar of Stockport, Cheshire to a gentleman in Windermere, Cumbria, who retained it until September 2008. It then briefly served as a wedding hire car before passing via a private individual into a collection. The vendor now considers this apparently very original Jaguar to have "very good" bodywork, paintwork, engine and automatic transmission and "excellent" Doeskin leather interior upholstery. The XJ12 is being sold complete with an enormous history file that includes the original sales invoice, tax disc holder, rear window sticker etc, plus its complete handbook pack with fully stamped service book, and a spare set of keys. The current MOT and road fund licence are valid until September 2013 and the odometer currently displays 98,865 miles.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
