The Lambretta Li Series 1 was launched in April 1958. Some 7 months after the TV175 Series 1 was launched. By then, Innocenti had eliminated most of the engine problems that the TV175 Series 1 had. The Li150 was a dramatic departure from the shaft-driven LD range that had preceded it. The new enclosed chain-driven engine was centrally positioned under the frame and had more power than the LD. With larger 10-inch wheels and beautifully designed panel work it was a superb scooter to ride and was instant hit. Coupled with beautiful styling and has been hugely sought after for many years by collectors.
This fine example was restored in Italy, in our opinion, to a very high standard. It is a subtle blend of originality combined with subtle and effective modern upgrades. The vendor, a qualified mechanic, has owned the scooter since 2019 and in that time has carefully modified certain mechanical functions. The engine is now powered by a top-end GT186 with a 58 x 108 crank fuelled by a 30mm Dellorto carburettor and complemented by a BGM V4 exhaust. The engine’s silent blocks have been uprated to large blocks for smoothness. The wiring has been upgraded to a modern standard and is now a 12-volt AC variatronic ignition. Everything else has been converted to DC and all electrical parts i.e. the lights, horn and digital speedometer all function when the engine is not running. The rectifier is hidden on the original voltage rectifier box and the battery is tucked into the under-seat toolbox. There is an added ignition which is also necessary for the excellent SIP Speedometer with rev counter, temperature gauge and clock. For improved handling and safety the scooter now has an Italian-made inboard front disc brake, adjustable rear shock and uprated front dampers. The scooter is complimented by a handlebar mirror, original period helmet-hook accessory and original rear rack with picnic hamper.
Presented in an original Lambretta colour of Azure Tirreno, the paint is in excellent condition with a few marks commensurate with light use of the last few years. Starting easily on the first kick, our consultant was able to ride this scooter, reporting an excellent ride.
