It had become apparent by 1995 that Kawasaki needed a new machine to compete in the important Superbike class resulting in the release of the the ZX 7R for 1996. The new machine featured a 748.3cc double overhead cam four with dimensions of 73 x 44.7mm instead of the 71 x 47.3mm dimensions employed by the last of the ZX750 series, the M. The combustion chamber shape was heavily revised and the engine construction was strengthened. A new twin ram air intake with a larger capacity, coupled to the revised combustion chamber shape and a new downdraught angle resulted in a healthy increase of power and combined with a 4-2-1 exhaust system that aided torque. The cooling system featured a curved radiator which helped to minimise the frontal area. A new frame that was both stronger and lighter was fitted and 6 piston callipers replaced the four piston items used on the ZX750M. In addition to the standard ZX7R, Kawasaki offered the ZX7RR, essentially a homolagation special. In RR form the machine was equipped with larger 41mm carburettors, instead of the 38mm items used on the "standard" R variant and the frames rake and trail could be adjusted. AT world Superbike level the new machine secured 7th and 9th in the 1996 championship establishing itself as a threat in the class , if not a regular winner. In the significant British Superbike Championship the model fared better with Chris Walker securing 2nd overall in the 1998 Championship racing for the British Kawasaki Superbike team run by Hawk Racing.

The ZX7RR offered dates from 1999 and is one of those campaigned by Hawk Racing in the British Superbike Championship. Ridden with great success by Glenn Richards, Chris Walker and Steve Plater, it is fitted with a full factory engine and gearbox (which has straight cut gears), a carbon air box and Ohlins suspension front and rear.
