Introduced in 1981, two years after its saloon sibling, the W126 S-class coupe was a singularly elegant design. Styled by Bruno Sacco, the two-door, pillarless construction did little to compromise interior space. Intended as a four-seater transcontinental express, its sleek silhouette hid all round independent suspension, disc brakes, power assisted steering and a range of potent V8 engines mated to automatic transmission. Top of the launch range, the 500SEC was continuously updated gaining Bosch KE-jetronic fuel injection in 1985. Developing a quoted 245bhp and 286lbft of torque, the 4,973cc SOHC V8 was reportedly capable of propelling the super coupe to 60mph in 7.2 seconds and onto 146mph top speed.
Finished in metallic black with beige upholstery, K554 KNN is described by the vendor as follows: "This immaculate 500SEC Coupe is one of the last of this model manufactured. It comes with total service history and has been MOT'd and serviced by Mercedes main agents within the last 200 miles! Both the bodywork and full leather interior are as new. Extras include air conditioning, electric seats, electric sunroof, cruise control etc. This must be without doubt one of the best examples available anywhere in the UK today!" Whether or not it lives up to these claims is for potential purchasers to decide for themselves. Most sources agree that 500SEC production for 1991 (the final year) was limited to 499 units worldwide making this impressive über-coupe a real rarity.
