BMW introduced the R65 650cc twin in 1978 together with a smaller 450cc version, the R45. Both machines employed a horizontally opposed twin cylinder, air cooled engine with two valves per cylinder and were equipped with a five speed gearbox, single dry plate clutch and shaft final drive. Designed to appeal to riders who sought a machine with the long distance touring ability of BMW's larger twins, but found the bulk intimidating, the new model featured a compact frame and lighter weight weighing 205K kg in comparison to the contemporary R75/7 at 215 kg. Performance remained on a par with the R75, which the model would eventually replace, with the new model offering a top speed of 175 km/h against the R75/7s 177 km/h and a 0 to 62 mph time 5.9 seconds compared to the larger models 6.7. The R65 was also significantly cheaper costing 6,980 DM when introduced compared to 7,985 DM for the R75/7.
During the models seven year production life 29,454 examples were produced with only detail changes being made to the machine, a twin front disc system replaced the early models single front disc and electronic ignition was adopted in 1981.
This example has covered approximately 47,280 miles and is descried as "running fine" by the vendor although it would benefit from a little tidying. Recently imported from the United States, it is offered Vat and Duty paid in the UK.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
