The Kenneth Howes styled Sunbeam Alpine, with a front-engined rear-wheel drive layout, was launched by the Rootes family owned Rootes Group in 1959. Of unitary construction, the Midland-made sports employed the Hillman Husky estate floor pan with cross-bracing. Initially, the Rapier 1494cc engine and 4-on-the-floor transmission were used. However, the original Alpine, with its pointy US market pitched rear fins, was progressively updated through a five model line, each Alpine slightly faster and more luxurious, culminating in the 1725cc MkV of the 1965-8 build period, by when 58,091 Alpines had been built.
This Alpine, built at the Ryton, Coventry, plant in 1968, was restored some five years ago. Powered by a 1725cc Holbay motor, which has been rebuilt and mildly tuned, and is claimed to be in very good order, this righthand drive open sports is a lovely useable classic, says the vendor. He tells us that the bodyshell is in very good condition as is the red paintwork, while the black interior is reportedly superb. This car is being auctioned here today entirely without reserve.
PLEASE NOTE: We are afraid this vehicle has been withdrawn from the 9th June sale, but will be sold at our next sale on 28th July 2004.
