Ford's Mustang needs no introduction as the first pony car, offered from late 1964 with a bewildering variety of engine and trim options, in three body styles, fastback, coupe and convertible. The most potent were the Shelby GT350 fastbacks with the 271bhp, 289 cu in Hi-Po V8, of which this car had originally been intended to become a recreation. Plans changed when the owner bought a finished car from the US.
What makes this project exciting is that it is understood to be a 1965-manufactured (but 1966-model year) car and therefore eligible to run in European FIA Historic Appendix K competitions - whether race or rally - once restored. The Ford's 1974 'M' suffix registration stems from when it was imported into the UK from the US.
Clearly a former race car, it is a rolling fastback bodyshell that comes with a host of spares including a highly modified 4.7-litre V8 engine with Holley double-pumper carburettor, another in lesser tune and four gearboxes. The internal condition of these components is unknown other than that the car was in use as a race car when acquired. The bodyshell already has a full rollcage fitted, and four new steel wings are supplied with the package along with glassfibre doors, bonnet and bootlid, but extensive work will be required to refurbish the car as a race, rally or road car. The good news for the builder is that every part for Mustangs, including trim, is available from a number of suppliers in the US speedily at surprisingly modest cost. Offered for sale with V5C registration document, this tempting fastback Mustang offers the basis for an exciting race or road car at a basement price.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
