Lot details Registration No: TVS 806 Chassis No: TD20790 Mot Expiry: April 2012
The first of the post-war MGs was the TC. It bore great similarity to the pre-war TB and was fitted with basically the same 1250cc OHV XPAG engine. The major difference between the TB and TC was the interior - the latter benefiting from a wider cockpit. The TC was superseded by the TD in 1950. Though visually quite similar to the earlier cars, it was built around a more modern chassis derived for the Y-Type saloon. The benefits included independent coil spring suspension at the front, rack and pinion steering, smaller 15in disc type road wheels and the option of LHD. The newcomer also boasted a hypoid bevel rear axle, hidden scuttle reinforcement hoop and twin leading shoe front brakes, and was five inches wider than its predecessor. Fed by a pair of semi downdraught SU carburetters, the 1250cc XPAG engine developed 54.4bhp and 64.5lbft of torque - sufficient to propel the TD to 60mph in just over 18 seconds and on to a terminal speed of just under 80mph. The engine was mated to a four-speed manual gearbox that featured synchromesh on the top three ratios. Bumpers and over-riders joined the list of standard equipment. Some 30,000 TDs had been produced by the time the model gave way to the TF in 1953, all but around 1,600 or so of which were exported - some 23,500 going to the USA alone.
The TD offered is an original UK market example that left the Abingdon factory in October 1952 and features Red coachwork teamed with a Cream interior. The vendor purchased the car from marque specialist Barry Walker in 2009. Last year he invested some £5,600 on the MG, having the hood and sidescreens replaced by A.S. Pickering of Bradford and the clutch renewed by Naylor Brothers. He considers the bodywork to be "restored to a good standard", the paintwork, trim and gearbox to be "good", and notes the engine was "overhauled in 1991". The TD comes with MOT into April 2012, a certificate confirming its date of manufacture and history file containing sundry invoices for work carried out etc. The registration number is not included with the car however.
