Unveiled at the March 1989 Geneva Salon, Mercedes-Benz’s R129-series SL range was beautifully engineered. The choice of numerous contemporary F1 drivers and movie stars, it could be had with a choice of six, eight and twelve-cylinder engines. Powered by a 2799cc DOHC straight-six developing 190bhp/199lbft, the SL280 was reputedly capable of 0-60 mph in 9.5 seconds and 140 mph.

Built in February 1994 for the UK market, chassis WDB1290582F100546 was specified with Imperial Red paintwork, Beige leather upholstery, five-speed automatic transmission, cruise control, Black fabric soft-top, air-conditioning, rear seats and 8-hole alloy wheels. Acquired by its current (fourth) registered keeper in 1999, the Mercedes-Benz has since been treated to over £15,000 worth of maintenance and improvement work. No fewer than seventeen service stamps (the last one carried out circa 100 miles ago in September 2020) confirm that the SL280 has covered some 122,000 miles from new. Starting readily upon inspection and running well during our recent photography session, the past 6,000 miles have seen the 2+2-seater treated to a replacement steering box, uprated headlamp HID kit, new discs / pads all round and mid / rear stainless steel exhaust sections. A great summer cruiser, this tempting R129-series is offered for sale with book pack, history file and fresh MOT certificate.
