Onetime railway engineering apprentice Walter Owen Bentley raced a 5hp Rees at Brooklands in 1909, bought his first motor car, a secondhand Riley, in 1910 and switched to cars, forming Bentley Motors in 1919. The first Bentley under his own name was the 3-litre, the first production example of which left the Cricklewood factory in 1921 costing £1050.
In 1980, by now in Rolls-Royce ownership, the T Series Bentley, along with the R-R Silver Shadow sister model, was replaced by the Mulsanne and R-R equivalent. The bodyshell was longer, wider and lower and gave owners 30 per cent more glass area. Initially, engines for both Bentley and R-R were normally aspirated 6750cc V8s. A turbocharger was added for the more powerful Mulsanne Turbo in 1982 and an improved Turbo R followed in 1985, by when there was also a cheaper (£49,497!) Bentley Eight with non-turbo motor, mesh grille and younger, more minimalist interior.
