  Lot 12

1970 Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow

Estimated at £18,000 - £22,000

Lot details
Registration No: J96915
Chassis No: SRH8187

The Shadow's arrival in 1965 was none too soon and did much to reverse the notion that Rolls-Royce was falling behind the times. It resulted in many firsts for the company including: unitary construction rather than separate body/chassis units, disc rather than drum brakes and independent rear suspension. Though shorter and narrower than the Silver Cloud III it replaced, the John Polwhele Blatchley-penned Shadow nevertheless possessed greater space for both luggage and passengers and certainly boasted far more modern looks. At launch it was powered by a 172bhp V8 engine of 6230cc, though this was enlarged to 6750cc during 1970. Early cars employed the same GM automatic transmission as the Silver Cloud, but this was superseded by the much vaunted Turbo Hydramatic system from 1970 onwards. The car's famed 'magic carpet' ride was achieved courtesy of a high-pressure hydraulic system licensed from Citroen. Initially it featured self-levelling at both ends, but this was deleted from the front in 1969.

Rarely has the phrase 'no expense spared' been so applicable as in relation to the right-hand drive Silver Shadow I on offer. Delivered new to St Helier Garages, Jersey in January 1970, it is finished in Regal Red with Black Everflex roof and upholstered in Beige leather. In 2002, the car was treated to a major restoration by The Owners Club UK Ltd of Merton, London, during which the car was reportedly stripped and all bodywork rectified. It was then repainted and reassembled using new parts as required. Two years later, the engine was taken apart and overhauled by Jacksons of St Peter, Jersey. Further remedial work and servicing has subsequently been carried out by Le Riche of Trinity, Jersey and Silver Lady Services Ltd of Bournemouth. The combined invoices for the last eight years total circa £120,000. Subtly enhanced via the installation of a CD/DVD in-car entertainment system and picnic tables to the rear of its front seats, this exceptional Rolls-Royce has been assessed for insurance valuation purposes at £100,000. Prospective purchasers are reminded that VAT at the rate of 17.5% will be payable on the hammer price if the car is to be road registered in the UK.

PLEASE NOTE: This vehicle is Jersey registered with the registration J96915. It does not have a current MOT.
