Lot details
Registration No: N15 WRC
Chassis No: GC8049368
Mot Expiry: Jan 2012

The Subaru Impreza (adapted from the Italian word impresa, meaning achievement) has been with us since November 1993 and was immortalized by the Prodrive-inspired run of WRC Constructors' titles in 1995, 1996 and 1997 and Drivers' championships for the late Colin McRae (1995), the late Richard Burns (2001) and Petter Solberg (2003). The model's distinctive engine note stems from its four-cylinder `boxer' engine that has good inherent balance and makes for a low centre of gravity. Capacities have ranged from 1.8-litre to 2.5-litre with or without turbocharger. The options of mechanical specification and trim levels have been numerous and have varied from country to country. The basis of the performance models has been the four-wheel drive, turbocharged WRX. In the late `80s, Subaru formed a division specifically to co-ordinate its motorsport activities; not least its assault on the FIA World Rally Championship. Dubbed Subaru Tecnica International (STI), it went on to create high-performance road-going derivatives of the WRX model, and the WRX STi has been the basis of the company's rally programme since its introduction in 1992. The first generation STi (1992-2001) was equipped with a turbocharged 2-litre version of the boxer engine. In RA form, as sold to private race and rally teams, the engine produced some 271bhp and 235lbft of torque. It came without sound-deadening or air-conditioning in order to save weight and was equipped with a Driver Controlled Centre Differential (DCCD).

The right-hand drive STi Turbo Saloon being sold is reportedly one of the special lightweight RA derivatives manufactured in 1995 and imported from Japan. It features a custom rollcage, Group N Phase 1 WRX engine with closed deck block, 4.1:1 R160 WRX rear differential; Cobra competition seats; TRS 5-point harnesses, and WMS stainless steel exhaust headers and CAT-back system. The Impreza is finished in White with contrasting Gold wheels and Black interior trim. The vendor regards the bodywork as "clean", and the paintwork, engine and transmission as "good". The interior is stripped out as it should be, however, the Cobra seats are apparently new. The MOT is valid until January 27 next year. An exciting car for road or track.
