1972 Citroen DS21

Lot details
Registration No: BRU 66K
Chassis No: DS03FA0679
Mot Expiry: July 2012

The iconic Citroen DS has enjoyed countless accolades since it first saw the light of day in 1955. The futuristic design of its Flaminio Bertoni-penned body was a stunning sight in the austere world of the '50s, and remains so even today. The self-levelling hydropneumatic suspension was also way ahead of its time, delivering a 'magic carpet' ride that many manufacturers would be grateful for even now. The newcomer was initially powered by an updated 1911cc version of the OHV four-cylinder unit previously found in the Traction Avant. The gearbox was mounted ahead of the engine and the differential sandwiched between the two. Braking was by inboard-mounted discs at the front and drums at the rear. Steering was by rack and pinion. Some 1.5 million D Series Citroëns were produced and the model immortalised in such films as The Day of the Jackal.

This original left-hand drive DS21 was manufactured in 1972, imported from France in 1989 and purchased by the vendor 10 years later. It sports Metallic Gold coachwork and is trimmed in velour. It is powered by the well-proven electronic injection 2175cc engine coupled to a fully automatic Borg Warner three-speed gearbox; the vendor informs us it is one of only 225 examples built to this specification, of which just 11 are thought to have survived. It was apparently treated to a full respray in 2005 and a thorough structural and mechanical overhaul in 2008, with £13,000 being spent with BL Autos & Sons of Hertfordshire and Citroen Classics. At the same time, a specialist in Belgium refurbished the automatic gearbox. Apparently this DS starred in a Craig David video in 2006 and more recently participated in a video and photo shoot for Helen Flanagan, who plays Rosie Webster in Coronation Street. The vendor currently regards the bodywork as "good to excellent", and paintwork as "average to good" (but notes that there is now some "slight bubbling in places"), the interior trim as "average" and the 2175cc engine and fully automatic transmission as "excellent". 'BRU 66K' is being sold complete with boot-mounted six-stack JVC CD player and an MOT into July 2012. The indicated mileage of 142,700 kilometres (88,700 miles) is believed but not warranted by the vendor to be genuine.
