Lot details Registration No: 390 NVT Chassis No: 103433DN Mot Expiry: April 2008
Eschewed by bank robbers everywhere, the 2.4 litre version of Jaguar's iconic MK2 was finally adopted by a very famous - albeit fictional - policeman, Inspector Morse. As countless television episodes proved, the 2.4 was the perfect conveyance for wafting between Oxford college spires and imposing country residences. It suited the beer drinking, highly literate, opera lover perfectly and was a million miles away from Jack Regan's Granada. Despite being overshadowed by its larger engined brethren in performance terms, the 2.4 was reputedly capable of nigh-on 100mph (a highly respectable figure during the 1960s). Credited with some 120bhp and 144lbft of torque, its 2483cc engine also contributed to less nose-heavy handling and better fuel economy. While, the use of the same highly polished wood veneers and thick leather hides as found in its 3.4 and 3.8 siblings meant that the 2.4 enjoyed an equally cosseting cabin.
Finished in grey with red leather upholstery, this particular example is variously described by the vendor as being in "original / A1" (engine, four-speed manual plus overdrive gearbox, electrical equipment, interior trim, chassis), "original / excellent" (bodywork, paintwork) or "A1" (wheels / tyres) condition. Reportedly "owned by garage proprietor / Jaguar specialist Arthur Williams and his family for forty-five years", '390 NVT' is further understood to have covered just 31,000 miles from new. Apparently never exercised on wet roads, the saloon is said to "drive like a new car". Something of a timewarp, this appealing, low mileage MK2 is offered for sale with "original logbook / manuals etc" and MOT certificate valid until April 2008.
