When Mercedes-Benz bring out a new SL roadster, with soft and/or hardtop option, you can be sure that the model range is going to be around for a very long time. Not only will the SL remain unchanged in Mercedes dealers showrooms for several years, but also examples will be seen being driven and enjoyed out and about on the roads of the world for many decades after that. For the SL has most probably become the most enduring of all collector vehicles. In any case, Merc build quality, particularly a decade or more ago, was second to none.
This 380SL, a Stuttgart-built right-hand drive roadster with the benefit of both hard and soft-tops (which are claimed to be in good condition), has had only three owners from new in 1983, the last for fifteen years. The 78,847 miles displayed on the odometer when entered for this sale is believed to be the genuine total covered by the car. Confirming that mileage, says the entrant, is full service history, maintenance having been undertaken fifty per cent by M-B main dealers and fifty percent by marque specialists.
The ex-factory spec of this classic Merc is certainly impressive, there being air-conditioning, power-steering, central locking, electric windows, rear child's seats, cruise control, Pioneer stereo, headlamp wash/wipe and alloy wheels. Current condition of bodyshell, white paintwork and interior in black MB Tex is said to be good. Both 3818cc eight-cylinder motor and automatic transmission are reportedly in good order as is the electrical equipment. The current MOT will be valid until next June.
