1967 MG B Roadster

Lot details
Registration No: OLP282E
Chassis No: GHN3118430
Mot Expiry: March 2012

The monocoque MG B was a welcome progression from the body-on-frame MG A that preceded it. The more modern construction resulted in weight savings (the car turned the scales at 2028 lb), reduced manufacturing costs and notably tauter handling. Initially, the newcomer was only available in Roadster form - the hatchback GT derivative not being offered until 1965. Suspension was by wishbones and coil springs at the front and a live axle mounted on leaf springs at the rear. Damping was by lever arm units all round. Braking was by discs at the front and drums at the rear. The model was powered by a 1798cc version of the BMC B-Series engine that reputedly produced 95bhp at 5,400rpm. The MKII model of 1967 brought an updated manual gearbox with revised ratios and synchromesh on all gears, as well as the option of a Borg Warner automatic unit. Other changes included a revised rear axle and a switch from dynamos to alternators. By the time Roadster production ceased in 1980, 399,070 examples are said to have been produced, a large proportion of which are still providing good service today. With parts (including new body shells) readily available, they can be made to run and run.

The sale car is a right-hand drive Roadster from 1967. It features Blue bodywork matched to Cream leather upholstery and is equipped with a manual gearbox plus optional overdrive. The vendor purchased 'OLP 282E' in April 1998 and still has the receipt for £3,500. It was apparently in reasonable condition and had benefited from an engine overhaul by Moorland Classic Cars. Plenty more has subsequently been invested in the MG and there is a folder full of receipts and old MOTs covering the last 13 years. In 2003, £1,658.92 was spent on the leather seats, carpets and trim, and a further £423 on a walnut dashboard and door trims. An additional £4,757.18 has since gone on rewiring, new hood seals and roll bar cover, welding, windscreen etc. The vendor regards the B's bodywork, trim, engine and gearbox as "very good" and the paintwork as "good". It is taxed until the end of February and MOT'd in March 2012.

All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
