Lot details Registration No: RT 6959 Chassis No: 6TT1707/6 Mot Expiry: May 2007
Second only to the 20/6 (from which it was partially derived) in terms of grandeur and status within the contemporary Austin range, the 16/6 was introduced during late 1927. Based around a sturdy ladder frame chassis equipped with all-round semi-elliptic leaf-sprung suspension and four-wheel drum brakes, it could be had in a variety of open and closed varieties. Powered by a torquey six-cylinder sidevalve engine allied to four-speed manual transmission, the model was reputedly capable of 60mph and 21mpg. Fitted with safety glass from 1929 onwards, the 16/6 remained in production until 1936. Exhibiting the traditional Austin virtues of strength, reliability and dependability, it proved a strong seller in period (though, today survivors are comparatively few and far between).
Finished in Royal Blue over black with black vinyl upholstery, this particular example is described by the vendor as being in "good" condition with regard to its 2107cc six-cylinder engine, four-speed manual gearbox, electrical equipment, interior trim, bodywork, paintwork and wheels / tyres. Said to have been "in the present ownership since 1994 giving twelve years of trouble free motoring", 'RT 6959' is further understood to have attended "The Vintage Austin Rally at Ashover on many occasions". Apparently kept in dehumidified underground storage during the winter months, the car was fitted with new batteries earlier this year. Benefiting from both a hood cover and sidescreens (the latter stowing in the appropriate door pockets when not in use); this handsome yet practical Vintage Austin Tourer is offered for sale with "MOT certificates and reports dating from August 1978 to May 2007".
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
