AJS and Matchless singles have always met with considerable success in trials competition, either in period, or as is the case with the example offered here, in classic events. This machine was purchased as a road going 350cc in 1979 by a Mr Burton of Sleaford who fitted a 1954 500cc engine. It subsequently passed into the hands of Ron Macbeth who bought it in 1988 and adapted it for trials use. Modifications undertaken at the time included the reduction of the wheelbase, a 14 tooth front sprocket and "dinner plate" rear sprocket, updated forks, an SRI magneto, rearset footrests, alloy rims and stainless spokes with wider section Pirelli tyres, a competition saddle and trials controls. Following the modifications the machine was ridden in various Southern trials including the Greybeards, Bluebeards and Talmags with a great deal of success and an accumulation of silverware.
The present owner purchased the machine in January 2002 and replaced the crankcases fitted with a pair of 350cc ones, although it retains the 500cc top end and continued to compete with it. Last MOT'd (for daylight use) in February 2002 it is currently on Sorn and is described as being in good condition in all respects.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
