The Jaguar XJ Series and its Daimler counterparts were introduced in 1968 and were the last saloons to have the personal input of Jaguar's founder, Sir William Lyons. Some four years into production a 12 cylinder XJ was offered for the first time, the Daimler version of which was dubbed the Double Six, thereby reviving the famous Daimler model name of the vintage era. Throughout the `70s Jaguar had been developing an all new model to follow the graceful Series 1, 2 and 3 cars. However, its launch was continually delayed due to a variety of problems and didn't see the light of day until 1986. Even then the line up didn't include a 12 cylinder option - the engine bay apparently being too narrow to house a unit of Vee configuration. Ford set about solving the problem when they took over Jaguar-Daimler in 1989 and the new 6-litre V12 cars finally came to market in 1993. The engines were mated to an equally new GM-based four-speed automatic transmission.

The Double Six offered is finished in metallic grey with grey leather interior. The car has reportedly had just two owners from new and is described by the vendor as being in "very good" (coachwork, paintwork) or "excellent" (engine, automatic transmission, electrical equipment, interior trim) condition - indeed he believes it to be one of the best of its type. Entering the current ownership via Ivor Bleaney in 2004, the Double Six is understood to possess "a full service history" and to be MOT'd until May 2010. Over the years, V12 Daimlers have been the car of choice for many members of the royal family, heads of state and top industrialists alike. They offer a unique blend of luxury and comfort, cosseting occupants in a very British blend of leather and wood trim while treating them to a `magic carpet' ride rarely if ever matched by rival marques.
