Erich Bitter produced limited edition versions of Opel models, many of them extremely sporting in character. His first Bitter was the Diplomat CD, a 2-door coupe with power-assisted steering and brakes, automatic transmission and a De Dion rear axle. Fans lapped them up as Bitter made and sold 463 such cars by 1979, when a new 3-litre model was introduced by the German specialist, based this time on the Opel Senator.
The specification of this1982-built SC with fuel-injected 2968cc 6-cylinder is impressive, there being power-steering, air-conditioning, electric mirrors and windows, central-locking and alloy wheels. We understand that the righthand drive fixed head coupe served as a factory demonstrator for three years, so maintenance during this time will have been done to works car standards.
More recent work carried out has included some attention to the GM 3-speed automatic transmission as well as both renewal of radiator and battery. The original radio-cassette is still present as is the handbook. When entered for this auction, 44,000 miles were displayed on the odometer and the MOT test certificate is current until next April.
Apart from the stylish and discreetly elegant appearance, not to mention the exclusivity (Bitters were only produced until 1991), a Bitter offers super seamless performance and, thanks to the mainstream GM/Opel mechanical and electrical equipment employed, dependable reliability, too, while this coupe should also reward an owner with potentially low maintenance costs.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
