The British-built Stag was designed to compete with the established SL models from Mercedes-Benz. Like the Triumph 2000 it was developed from, it was styled by Italian maestro Giovanni Michelotti and featured the monocoque construction, fully independent suspension, disc/drum brakes, power-assisted rack and pinion steering and driveline of that Saloon. The powerplant, however, was an all-new OHC V8 of 3,000cc capacity, fed by a pair of Zenith Stromberg carburettors. The Stag received a warm reception at the time of launch in 1970. However, views quickly soured once it fell into the hands of customers. There were quibbles over build quality, the camshaft drive chains, cylinder heads, cylinder head gaskets, water pumps and waterways of the new V8 engine. Many owners resorted to removing the powerplants altogether - replacing them with the Rover V8, Ford V6 or Triumph's own six-cylinder engine. Cars that were modified in this way are now considered less desirable than unmolested ones. Moreover, as the years have gone by, restorers have solved the V8's problems. Had Triumph themselves managed to do so, not only would the engine have found its way into other of the company's models, but the Stag range would surely have lived a longer, more successful life. As it was, production ceased after some 26,000 examples had been made.
This three-owner Triumph Stag is a righthand drive 1977 model with Inca Yellow coachwork and a Black interior. It is equipped with the overdrive manual gearbox and both hard and soft tops. Recent work includes new rear arches and a windscreen-out respray. The vendor now gives the paintwork '9 out of 10', rates the interior trim as 'original and very good', the engine as 'original and as a good Stag one should be' and the gearbox as 'all working very well'. BBV 434R comes complete with photos of the restoration, original service book with 12 stamps up to 43,000 miles (the odometer now shows an 51,556 miles), handbook and other manuals, 21 old MOTs, old tax discs and numerous repair invoices etc. A fully sorted Stag is a joy to own and drive and the Michelotti styling as fresh as the day it was conceived.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
