BSA introduced a pair of new unit construction twins, typed the A50 and A65 during 1962. Displacing 500cc and 650cc respectively the new models were initially offered in comparatively gentle states of tune designed to appeal to the touring rider, riders seeking a sporting Beeza twin were able to choose between the Super Rocket or Rocket Gold Star pre-unit A10 series machines until 1963. The end of production of the two pre unit models resulted in sporting versions of the A65 being made available, with a new Rocket, later to be known as the Lightning being announced for 1963. For the US market the model was known as the Lightning Rocket and featured some detail differences from the UK market machine, the side panels were slightly abbreviated and a smaller fuel tank together with high handlebars were fitted. For the 1965 season the "Rocket" element was dropped from the name and for 1966 the siamezed exhaust system was replaced by separate exhaust pipes and silencers on each side of the machine.
The beautiful original example offered was recently repatriated from the United States where it had been carefully housed in a house for over forty years. The machines recorded mileage of 1350 miles is supported by its excellent overall condition. The engine is described as being "perfect" by the vendor and the transmission as "all working", as is the electrical system. The machines cosmetic condition is "near perfect" with only a slight imperfection to the chrome on the fuel tank being visible. The original rear tyre has taken a slightly set over time and the fork gaiters have perished.
Arguably one of the most handsome variants of the A65 twins, the US market Lightning's offer performance on a par with that of its major rivals and are rarely seen in the UK in this condition. The machine is offered Vat and duty paid in the UK with a C and E 386 and the vendor informs us that he will be happy to assist with its registration.
