Lot details Registration No: GFX 84D Chassis No: HBJ8L37376 Mot Expiry: Feb 2007
Introduced in 1964, the 3000 MKIII BJ8 was an altogether more refined creature than its 100/4 ancestor. Equipped with a centre console, proper convertible hood, wood veneer dashboard, redesigned exhaust system and wind-up windows, it proved a comfortable and fast grand tourer. With 148bhp and 165lbft of torque on tap from the 2,912cc OHV straight six engine, its reputed 124mph top speed was accessed via a four-speed plus overdrive manual gearbox. Last of the line, the Phase Two variant benefited from redesigned rear suspension, strengthened splined hubs and larger diameter front disc brakes.
Finished in Old English White with red leather upholstery, this particular example is described by the vendor as being in "good" condition with regard to its four-speed plus overdrive manual gearbox, electrical equipment, interior trim, chassis, bodywork, paintwork and wheels / tyres (while, he rates the engine as "very good"). Said to have been "imported from San Francisco, California in 1990", 'GFX 84D' was subsequently converted to right-hand drive as part of an extensive restoration that saw it "stripped to a bare shell, repainted, rewired and retrimmed". Entering the current ownership in 1996, the Big Healey was reportedly treated to an engine, gearbox and overdrive rebuild (together with a new clutch) by marque specialist JME during 2003. Riding on wire wheels, this desirable Austin-Healey 3000 MKIII Phase Two is offered for sale with Heritage Certificate, various old MOTs, assorted bills, restoration photos and MOT certificate valid until February 2007.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
