Imperial War Museum Duxford

  Lot 87

1957 Chevrolet Corvette

Lot details
Registration No: EU-Reg
Chassis No: E57S1O1734
Mot Expiry: Exempt

This decidedly striking first generation (C1) Corvette sports Onyx Black and Silver paintwork teamed with a Black hood, Black hardtop and Red vinyl upholstery. The presence of an NCRS (National Corvette Restorers Society) sticker suggests it was the subject of a previous refurbishment, and it is certainly in good enough condition throughout to support that notion. The car has spent the last 30 years as a member of the Dick Van Dijk collection and he says it presents as well today as when his then eight year old son imported it!

For many, the 1957 model year examples are the pick of the C1 cars, as they are felt to be the ultimate expression of the twin (as opposed to quad) headlamp design. Standard equipment comprised: dual exhausts, bucket seats, three-spoke competition-style steering wheel, carpeting, exterior mirror, rev-counter and electric clock. The options boasted by the sale car include: auxiliary hardtop ($200), contrasting colour for the sculptured flanks ($18), courtesy lights ($8), 4.6-litre/283ci (245hp) engine and push-button AM radio.

The powerplant's `EH' suffix confirms that engine choice allied to a three-speed close-ratio manual transmission. Apparently 2,045 of the 6,339 Vettes manufactured in 1957 were fitted with this unit, complete with alloy inlet manifold, a pair of Carter WCFB four-barrel carburettors and finned 'Corvette' scripted rocker covers. This 'Turbo Fire' engine developed a claimed 245hp at 5,000rpm and 300lbft of torque at 3,800rpm. The extremely handsome Chevy offered is undoubtedly one of the most authentic we have encountered and is awash with period detailing. The paintwork is still highly presentable and the attractive upholstery and hood are totally tear-free. The total mileage is believed (but unwarranted) to be 78,883 and the car comes complete with faux spinner hubcaps and whitewall tyres, plus a shortened steering column for the benefit of taller drivers.

All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.

You can collect your new pride and joy from our venue until 1pm the day following the sale or our partners are on hand to help arrange safe transportation:
