Lot details Registration No: HRK 755 Chassis No: 8804101 Mot Expiry: Oct 2004
Some 120 MkII Super Snipe rolling chassis were sent by Humber of Coventry to Newport Pagnell coachbuilders Tickford to be equipped with streamlined 6-seater convertible bodies with detachable panels enclosing rear wheels and concealed door hinges. These were much more sophisticated than the Super Snipe open tourers which the Rootes firm had produced during WW2 and which had been particular favourites with the military as staff cars.
Atop the sturdy box-section Humber chassis, the Tickford bodies were constructed around a treated timber framework with screen pillars and scuttle in steel, and doors as well as the rear of the vehicle, which had been altered quite extensively from the original Rootes design, crafted in aluminium. Of the original 120 run, a dozen were earmarked for British Royal Family touring duties on the African continent. It is believed that only 26 of these handbuilts have survived, even fewer actually still being on the road as this rarity is.
HRK 755 has been in receipt of restoration, which has included renewal of the ash frame. The open body has been painted in Midnight Blue, the interior has black vinyl trim, the mohair hood with West of England cloth headlining recently renewed. The exhaust is in stainless steel and both generator and battery have been replaced. Current overall condition, including 4-litre six and 4-speed manual box, is described as good. The MOT is valid until October, the tax until next May.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
