Lot details Registration No: XYB789M Chassis No: 2R2541BW Mot Expiry: June 2006
Introduced in 1972, the XJ12 was flagship of the contemporary Jaguar range. A four-door saloon blessed with Gran Turismo performance, its 5343cc SOHC V12 engine set new standards in production car design. A paragon of smoothness, refinement and quiet running, it was allied to three-speed automatic transmission and promised nigh on 150mph performance. Utilising the same advanced monocoque shell as its XJ6 sibling, the XJ12 also employed all round independent coil and wishbone suspension, four wheel disc brakes and rack and pinion steering. Heralded by the motoring press as one of the best cars in the world, it was revised the following year as the Series II complete with more streamlined radiator grille and revised front valance.
Finished in regency red with cinnamon leather upholstery, this particular long wheelbase example is variously described by the vendor as being in good (electrical equipment, wheels / tyres) or very good (engine, automatic transmission, interior trim, chassis, bodywork, paintwork) condition. Though, he notes that "the air conditioning system probably needs recharging" and "the spare wheel has had a puncture repair". Reported to have had just four keepers, it has been in the current ownership "for the past twenty-four years". Believed but not warranted to have covered 86,775 miles from new, it was apparently treated to "a complete overhaul of all running gear" in 2001 "with replacement of all bushes, bearings, brakes, springs, shocks, steering joints etc". Said to "look as good underneath as on top", it received a new headlining in July of this year. Further benefiting from a "new battery 19/7/05 (Halfords, under guarantee with receipt)", it is offered for sale with Heritage Certificate, MOT certificate valid until 26th June 2006 and road tax valid until 30th June 2006.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
