The 1965-introduced Silver Shadow was the first Rolls-Royce model to employ unitary construction rather than a separate chassis and body. It was also thought that the upright styling of the Silver Cloud III and sister Bentley S3 were beginning to look rather dated. While the new car was even more directed at the owner-driver rather than the chauffeur up front and toffs in the back. Initially, the pop Roller was fitted with a 6230cc engine similar to that under the bonnets of the R-R and Bentley predecessors, although the now familiar 6750cc V8 powered all Shadows from 1970. Important changes had been made to the Shadow chassis, too, most notably the adoption of all round independent suspension, including an ingenious engine pump-driven self-leveling system, and disc brakes.
The 1975-manufactured Silver Shadow I being auctioned here has had eight former keepers. Bodywork, which is finished in two-tone blue metallic, is said to be good as is the cream interior, while V8 engine and 3-speed automatic transmission are reportedly in good order. The vendor tells us that the saloon had 50,931 miles displayed on the odometer when entered for the sale and will be driven from North Yorkshire to the sale. Beautifully made, extremely luxurious, supremely effortless and seamlessly rapid when required, Silver Shadows have become arguably the best value for money in the classic car market today. This is your affordable chance to own a Rolls-Royce.
PLEASE NOTE: This vehicle now has an MOT until Feb 2005.
