Only in production for a short while and consequently very rare, the Daimler 21HP was introduced in 1923. Boasting a 10'8.25" wheelbase and 4'9.25" track, its sturdy ladder frame chassis was equipped with all round leaf-sprung suspension (semi-elliptic front, three-quarter elliptic rear) and two-wheel brakes. Powered by a six-cylinder 3,021cc (Bore 75mm x Stroke 114mm) sleeve valve engine mated to a four-speed manual gearbox, its back axle housed a worm-drive differential. Reportedly capable of some 50mph, it was noted for the smooth, quiet way in which it performed. Unlike most of its rivals in the luxury car field, Daimler possessed its own coachbuilding facilities. Thus, the majority of 21HP cars (with their distinctive fluted radiator grilles and three-piece bonnets) were bodied in-house.
Finished in beige over black with tan leather upholstery, this particular example carries three-door open tourer coachwork. A handsome design, it is described by the vendor as being "very original". Reported to have "spent some years in a Dutch museum", it sports fork-mounted headlamps, side-mounted spare wheel, scuttle fresh-air vents and a two-piece windscreen. Re-registered since its return to the UK, we understand that research into this fascinating car's history is ongoing. As such, it is hoped that more details will be available by the time of sale.
All successful bids must be paid in full by midday the day after the auction at the latest.
